Put to the test: 9 products for home users, 4 solutions for business users The laboratory of AV-TEST examined a total of 13 products under MacOS Sierra. The first 9 on the list are for home users: Avast Security 12.9 Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac 6.1 Comodo Antivirus 2.2 F-Secure Safe 17.0 Intego Mac Internet Security X9 10.9 Kaspersky Lab Internet Security for Mac 18.0 Sophos Home 1.2 Symantec Norton Security 7.5 Trend Micro Antivirus 8.0 4 solutions for business users ESET Endpoint Security 6.5 McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac 10.2 SentinelOne Next Generation Endpoint Security Software 2.0 Sophos Central Endpoint 9.6 All versions were evaluated under identical iMacs running on MacOS Sierra 10.12.6. The solutions were installed in the test as additional protection for MacOS Sierra. ![]() None of the security packages switched off the internal protection functions of MacOS Sierra. High detection rates for many security packages In the test involving packages for home users, a total of 6 out of 9 packages detected the 514 selected MacOS attackers: Avast, Bitdefender, Kaspersky Lab, Sophos, Symantec and Trend Micro. Intego overlooked a few malware samples, yet still attained a good 99.4 percent. F-Secure delivered a somewhat weaker performance with 93.8 percent. The security package from Comodo only detected an unacceptable 38.1 percent. Among the solutions for corporate users, the products from ESET, SentinelOne and Sophos detected all attackers 100 percent. Endpoint Security from McAfee experienced a minor detection error: 99.6 percent. What is a content player. Using an iPad/iPod might bring better results setting them to never sleep and AirPlaying a video. My solution to play a video on a loop for long period of time is this: Using the VLC player App and the Remote Playback feature. But I dont think that would be good for more than 24hours as im sure the devices will have to refresh the signal. You can navigate to the IP address in a web browser (as long as the computer is on the network - does seem to work across subnets) you can drop a video into that address and the Video will be loaded onto the Apple TV locally (can be accessed in VLC player). VLC has a repeat option after you start the video. In an additional test, the detection performance of Windows files was also evaluated. While these are innocuous on a Mac, in a mixed network, malware could thus hide on a Mac – especially when it is used as a server. For consumer users, the packages from Bitdefender, Kaspersky Lab and Trend Micro demonstrated superb detection rates between 99 and 100 percent. Likewise, high detection rates among corporate solutions were reached by ESET, McAfee and Sophos. Lots of protection with a low system load In the past, many Mac security packages demonstrated a conspicuously high system load. The fact that those days are now over can be seen in the test segment on speed. In evaluating this criterion, the testers copied a selection of files on a reference system encompassing a volume of 27.28 GB, clocking the time necessary for the operation. ![]() In addition, various downloads were performed, and these times were also recorded. On the reference system, the copying took 147 seconds, and the downloads lasted 56 seconds. The exactly identical copying procedure and the same downloads were then repeated with each security solution installed, and the times were measured. Using this method, it quickly becomes apparent which antivirus solution requires too many resources in everyday use, thereby slowing down a Mac system. System load on products for home users The security packages for consumer users from Kaspersky Lab, Trend Micro and Symantec added a load of a mere 1 to 2 additional seconds when copying and downloading. Those levels are actually unnoticeable in everyday use. All these packages also achieved the 100 percent mark in detection. Microsoft webcam lifecam download for mac free. Just like to say a very big thanks for this tip and this site. Bitdefender and Sophos Home did just as good a job at detection, but required as much as 6 to 13 seconds more time. Avast Security did indeed deliver error-free detection, but it slowed down the system in the test procedure by 73 seconds – that is too much. In response to a query, the manufacturer stated that in the tested version the standard default configuration was still set to immediate validation during download and not after download as is the case with other products. In the new subsequent version, they changed the default setting to validate the download afterwards, which saves lots of time. If the so-called web shield is activated by the user, then the download is once again validated immediately, but more slowly. Corporate solutions with a low system load on the client Two of the four solutions for business users consistently demonstrated a very low system load on the client. The products from SentinelOne and McAfee increase the time factor when copying and downloading in the test by 1 to 2 seconds. I was an iPhoto / Aperture user on my Mac, but unfortunately they no longer work properly on my computer. So I started to use the new Photos package. Photos is actually pretty good for me. It has far more editing capabilities buried inside it than many first suspect, and it has almost everything I want, except good tools to retouch portraits. I've also added some good extension to Photos -- like the DxO Photos extension, which is great for landscape work. But I keep on reading how Photos is terrible, so I tried out some other packages. ![]() Lightroom -- hated it with a passion (really clunky, slow, and unreliable). A few other great RAW processing / editing packages -- DxO, Capture One, etc. -- but they don't seem to do file management very well. What else should I be looking at? Again, I know Lightroom is a popular option, but I honestly thought it was awful -- definitely not elegant, reliable, or fast. What else, besides Photos with some good Extensions, should I look at for editing RAW files / managing large photo libraries / etc.? I miss Aperture. I really wish Apple kept it. Boot Camp is the easy way to run Windows on a Mac, but it has one major drawback: it requires you to reboot. And that can be a rather big disruption of your work, depending on how much time you spend in either or Windows. Virtualization software like Parallels Desktop 7 avoids this glaring issue altogether, as it lets you run a full copy of Windows from within Mac OS X. Parallels 11 is a polished virtualisation solution that allows Mac users to switch easily between OS X and Windows apps, regardless of which operating system they were written for. Parallels is one of our favorite ways to run Windows and other operating systems on the Mac (without rebooting), and today the company is running quite a notable promotion. But is it actually the best of both worlds or just a bag of compromises? [ VDI shoot-out: and ] Virtualization for serious work? In part 1 of my series, I made it very clear that virtualization solutions such as Parallels or VMware Fusion are merely a compromise for anyone who needs to get serious work done or has to spend several hours in full-screen Windows. It was only a couple of days after that article went live that Parallels came out with version 7 of their 'Parallels Desktop'. And they didn't exactly play small: Parallels promised not just the full-blown Lion support (Launchpad, full screen mode, Mission Control) and the ability to run Mac OS X Lion as a guest machine. They also made a big promise of running Windows '. The company also claims that Parallels Desktop 7 runs 45% faster using and 60% faster on 3D-accelerated applications (games, rendering, etc.) than before. These claims, coupled with enhanced support for USB, networking and sound cards (7.1 surround sound in a virtual machine), made me curious. Can I run my Windows applications under Lion on Parallels Desktop 7 with no compromise? Can I run it all day? [ ] For this shootout, I took the plunge and used Parallels Desktop 7 for over four weeks. After having some severe performance issues with under Parallels, I decided to use Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 under Mac OS X Lion for my test. Here's what I found: Pricing and installation Boot Camp is free and pre-installed on every Mac (post 2006). ![]() Parallels, on the other hand, charges you $79.99 ($49.99 for upgrade) for its Mac virtualization product. In both cases, that also excludes the price of a Windows 7 license, which you'll need! So, if you're adding Windows 7 Home Premium to the mix, think at least $99 (for the system builder DVD) of additional charges for the privilege of running Windows on your Mac. Boot Camp doesn't support Windows XP or Vista, so if you're going the Boot Camp route on OS X Lion, you're basically stuck with Windows 7. I can imagine this being a deal breaker for some companies. Parallels Desktop 7, however, fully supports Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. And it doesn't stop there. Parallels supports Chrome OS, and even the Windows 8 Developer Preview, which makes it a full-blown virtual PC solution and not just a way of running Windows on your Mac. In fact, a built-in downloader allows you to grab the respective ISOs and install them automatically. I think that's quite a killer feature for IT pros: Getting all of these OSes to run on a Mac is torture, so in terms of OS support and pure simplicity, Parallels just blows Boot Camp away. The Windows 7 installation procedure is fairly straightforward in both Boot Camp and Parallels Desktop 7. You insert the DVD or the ISO, perform some initial configuration and run the Windows installer. However, I went a slightly different route. I actually used Parallels to virtualize my Boot Camp partition. Yes, Parallels Desktop 7 allows you to select your pre-existing Windows 7 partition on your Mac and just run it as it if were an actual virtual machine. This is actually the only way to compare performance of Boot Camp versus Parallels, since I'm testing both solutions on the exact same configuration with the exact same number of programs installed and identical settings. E-Sword for iPad is the most significant development in e-Sword’s development. This most useful and informative study aid can now be used anywhere and everywhere my iPad goes. It has become one of the most used applications on my iPad and overcomes the limitations of running eSword on Mac OS X. Thanks to whoever made this possible. We all believe in something. The Holy Bible is probably the only book that has been translated into most world languages. E-Sword 10.2.1 is a free-to-download application that allows you to read, add comments and write notes while you read the Old and the New Testament. This application allows you to quickly get an idea of the “theme” or emphasis of a Bible book, chapter or passage by using the Analyze Verses feature. There are bookmarks available which can enhance your study of the Scriptures. The bookmarks are remembered from session to session just like the ribbon in your Bible, only that e-Sword has ten of them. Features • KJV and KJV+ bibles included • Five visible panels • Integrated text editor • Scripture tooltips • Graphics viewer • Audio sermons • WYSIWYG printing The latest version of e-Sword has many fixes and improvements such as automatic bookmarks, direct download of premium modules, numerous scripture references, etc. You can install this application on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 and in one of the 30 supported interface languages. Two versions of the King James Bible are included with the installation, but more can be downloaded and keep in mind that some of them are not free. The user interface of e-Sword is very easy to use and understand and this is one of the goals of the developer. The menus and the toolbar are located on top while the status bar is at the bottom as usual. The entire screen consists of five panels and four of them can be displayed individually for better reading. ![]() Users can compare or display the two Bible versions in parallel and even use a dictionary which translates every word and displays its explanation of it. The program offers Commentaries and Editors panels which can be used to improve your studying experience. Basic Operations e-Sword allows you to set a bookmark and you can do this by selecting a verse and clicking on the desired bookmark. You can highlight or underline Scriptures, search them and copy them to the editor where most of the well-known text formatting operations are available. Conclusion e-Sword 10.2.1 is software with the primary idea to reach as many common people, theology students and enthusiasts as possible and present the Holly Bible to them in a very attractive and interactive way. There are many possibilities for program customization and this is probably the best about this app, besides that it is free. You're right: Docker for Mac and Docker for Windows both run Linux containers in a Linux VM. Virtual machines are supposed to have near native performance. However, if the host machine does not have enough memory to serve the memory requirements of the VM as well as that of the underlying OS (Mac or Windows), then there's going to be performance penalties because of things like swap thrashing and memory balooning. There could be a further slowdown if your host has a slow spinning disk instead of an SSD. So: Assigning more memory to the Linux VM will help only if there is enough memory in the host. The probably is not even usually CPU, memory, or network - it is almost always entirely down to the disk performance. Even then, it's not the disks of the VMs themselves, it's mounting folders from the host onto a VM - because it's not a native filesystem, solutions like NFS exist, different Hypervisors have their own filesystems. Docker for Mac uses a custom one called osxfs to share the host filesystem with the VM it runs. In other words, if you mount anything into your containers from your host machine, you are very likely to see worse performance. If you don't mount anything from the host machine, you are likely to see near-native performance, as long as you haven't run out of other resources (CPU, memory, network). You can read more about osxfs here: Edit: To add to this, you may have realised from what I've just been saying - if you didn't use any host-mounted folders ever, you could actually sync the code into your VM. I've done this before using unison and you can achieve near-native performance then on macOS. Since I did this I believe a tool has been released to handle this automatically for you, but I can't remember what it's called. Onyx for mac os x 10.8.2. I've been using Linux now for about a year and have been loving native Docker without messing around. While still slower than running natively on Linux, there are some mitigations for performance problems for shared folders on MacOS: • If the app in your container creates cache files (like compiled code), define this cache directory as a separate volume and don't export it to your host. This will speed up access of the app to the cache folder • Try different volume caching strategies (default is to always synchronize, which is slow. You might not need that strict guarantees): • Sync code between host and container using instead of shared volumes • You can speed up file sharing by using NFS instead of the native MacOS, like in Never used the latter two myself, although I heard they work well enough for a dev environment. The first two were enough for the MacOS user on my dev team to make the experience less painful. Using Linux is definitely the better option for docker. I think it depends on a lot of things. Not all set ups with Docker for Windows are very slow. For example, I moved from running Docker on Linux to Docker for Windows on my dev box and while I did notice a slow down in volume mount performance, it didn't get unusably slow but there's room for improvement. I am using an i5 3.2GHz with an SSD (about 3 years old). The amount of indirection going on with my Windows box is high, yet I'm happy with the performance. • Docker for Windows runs the Docker daemon. • Windows Subsystem for Linux routes its own Docker client to that Docker for Windows daemon. • All of my source code is mounted from an external HD (not SSD) into WSL. • That WSL mounted source code is also mounted back into Docker for Windows. With all of that going on, web applications with hundreds files reload faster than I can move my mouse to click refresh in a browser. Even rails applications process changes and serve requests in 100ms or less in development. The only exception is when dealing with assets. With webpack I load in 1.4mb of Javascript through babel and without any caching it takes around 500ms for it to compile a change. Likewise 250kb of SCSS going through a lot of loaders takes 1.8 seconds without caching or optimizing anything. If anyone is curious, I wrote exact steps on how I have everything set up here: • • • •. As others have said, when you use mounted volumes from host, things are gonna slow down quite alot. And it seems that atleast for Docker for Mac every update pose another issues with speed. For example couple of weeks ago one of our devs struggled when every docker compose up took 10-15 minutes (normally 20-30 seconds). Wasted half day trying to optimize dockerfiles/docker-compose.yml and found out that when you set env var NO_PROXY=* before running docker/docker-compose the speed was restored to almost normal (atleast for mac). I still dont know/care why this magical env var change helped. |
